The Centre
 
The Vijnana Kala Vedi Cultural Centre was founded and registered as a Charitable Association in 1977, by Louba Schild, a French artist who has been living in Kerala since 1968.
 
The objectives of the Centre are to
   
  Provide foreign artists, researchers and culturally oriented tourists with opportunities to become acquainted with the culture and arts of India.
   
  Preserve the traditional arts and crafts of Kerala in their natural and spiritual context, to foster the artistic education of youngsters in Kerala.
 
The Centre was created with the help and guidance of various organisations and individuals like:
   
  UNESCO
  Sangeet Natak Academy of India
  The South Zone Cultural Centre
  Madame Nadia Schild Chipiloff (Musician and therapist, Paris)
  Mr. Pushpa Das (former director of I.F.P.C - UNESCO)
  Padmashree Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair (Late patron of the Centre)
  Sree Kavalam Narayana Panicker etc.
  Dr. D. Babu Paul I.A.S is the Chief patron of the Centre.
   
 
The Centre welcomes visitors from all countries, of any age and profession, for shorter or long-term stays.
   
 
(a)
for individual visitors
      Short term courses one week to three months
      Long term courses from four months onwards
(One to three weeks - Acquaintance courses, One to three months - Initiation courses, Four months to One year - Intense courses)
 
(b)
for special groups
Workshops and performances two days to three weeks
   
 
(c)
for local Indian students:
Regular and Week-end courses in Karnatic Music, Classical dances, Kathakali and Painting.
   
   
 
Many of the artists and students who have learned Indian arts at the Centre have been receiving scholarships from organisations like UNESCO, ICCR, Sangeet Natak Academi, Alliance Francaise, Cambridge University etc. This establishes by itself the national and international recognition for the Centre.
 
In 1981, the Centre participated in an 'India' exhibition at the museum of modern art in Paris.
   
 
In 1991, Vijnana Kala Vedi organised a week long festival at Kovalam, "Saagara", as per the request from Government of Kerala.
   
 
In 1991, the Centre organised a Seminar on traditional architecture and mural painting. Following which, Vijnana Kala Vedi
   
 
Submitted a project report for creating a Centre for Traditional architecture and Mural Painting.
   
 
As per the above project, a Centre for Traditional Architecture and Mural Painting, the Vasthu Vidya Gurukulam was created by the Kerala Government in Aranmula.
   
  The Centre owns a Kathakali kaliyogam.
   
 
In 1996 and 1997, the centre worked as a partner with FIPC - UNESCO for the programme " UNESCO-ASCHBERG bursaries for Artists", to grant scholarships to young professional artists from third world countries, offering them a six month residence at the Centre for learning traditional music and dance.
   
  The Centre is a member of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage and of the District Tourism promotion Council of Pathanamthitta.
   
 
The Centre has been included in the Cultural Resource Directory by Indira Gandhi National Centre For The Arts.
   
  The Centre has offered guidance for a few Full Bright Scholars.
   
  Every year the Centre receives around 200 foreign visitors and introduces them to Indian arts.
   
 
Since its inception, the centre has produced many a foreign professional artists in Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Bharatanatyam, Karnatic vocal music, Kalamezhuthu, Mural Painting etc.
   
 
In 2001, the centre was declared as a Cultural Educational Institution engaged in the teaching and promoting of Traditional arts and Indian Culture by the Dept. of Culture, Govt. of Kerala. The Centre is also recognised by the Dept. of Tourism, Govt. of Kerala.
   
 
The Centre began the Teaching English programme in 2003, with the official recognition of General Education Department, Govt. of Kerala, for the first time in Kerala.
   
 
VIJNANA KALA VEDI CULTURAL CENTRE - A traditional school for Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Bharatanatyam, Karnatic Music, Tabla, Maddalam, Hatha Yoga, Mural Painting, Wood Carving, Cooking, Kolam, Kalarippayatt.A Language school for the learning of Sanskrit, Hindi and Malayalam. A Centre for volunteers to Teach English in India.
