VOLUNTEERING
IN KERALA- TEACHING ENGLISH in INDIA |
| |
|
| |
|
|
| |
| Volunteering in Kerala by Teaching English is another
"first time in Kerala" programme from VKV, organised with an exclusive
permission from the Department of Education, Government of Kerala.
|
| |
| Here is an opportunity
for you to help Poor village children to understand and speak English
better, by Teaching English. You can also learn for yourselves in the centre |
| |
These
children who cannot afford to learn in English medium schools always
lag behind those rich children in their conversational capabilities
in English. This teaching English programme is a humble attempt to help them to be more confident
with their English language, which is very important for their higher
studies and career.(English is one of the National languages
in India and is definitely the most important in higher education
and in career) |
| |
| If English
is your mother tongue or if you hold a certificate enabling you to
teach English, then you can volunteer to teach English in the village schools around Aranmula. |
| |
Classes
are for one hour from 4 - 5 in the evening, only on Mondays-Fridays.
The schools are 2-4kms away from the centre, in and around Aranmula. The minimum stay to commit yourselves to volunteer to Teach English is
TWO MONTHS. The children are from the 8th or 9th standards -
12 - 14 years of age, having some basic knowledge of English |

"I came to VKV beacuse of the teaching programme - the chance to
teach English to Keralan children was fantastic opportunity for
me, given that I had been a teacher in London for 12 years. It was
wonderful to watch the children grow in confidence and ability;
to move from shy, quiet reponses to being certain of themselves
and positive that they could be understood and did have the language
tools to communicate well with a native English speaker. My last
lesson with them was very sad - but I will take their smiles and
good wishes back to England and remember them always. I thank Rajesh
for his incredible optimism and hard work in ensuring the programme
was a succes" - Joanne Field, UK in Feb 2004 |

IMPORTANT
NOTES: |
| |
We would
request, only those who feel sincerely committed to the cause, take
this option to Teach English through our centre.
We have found out in the past that many decided to volunteer, inspite
of having no knowledge or idea at all, to at least keep the children quiet in their classes.
We are unable to entertain such a trend and would like to inform the
volunteer that this is not an easy task and needs a lot of hard work
and sincerity from you.
You should definitely know how you are going to teach these village
children, who have only some basic knowledge of English.
You must also be sure of how you can control them in your classes.
They are very well behaved if given the structure and discipline of
a proper lesson!
Since you are not supposed to teach any specific text books or curriculum
to these children, you will have to entirely plan by yourselves what
you intend to teach and also should have a clear idea of how the children
will benefit from your techniques.
You are welcome to bring any study materials which you think will
be necessary for your style and techniques.
The most important aim of the programme is to help these poor children
to improve their Spoken English skills and to help them have a better
understanding and listening skills of English language. You can also
work towards improving and polishing their pronunciation.
The schools where you teach are 2-4 Kms away from the centre and volunteers
generally hire an autorickshaw for the conveyance, the cost of which has to be met by the volunteer.
If you are a good volunteer and will teach during each and every possible day (without skipping even a single day of lesson)
we might decide to make a small reduction in your prices, adequate enough to meet a major part of the conveyance expense.
DRESS CODE FOR VOLUNTEERS during teaching sessions. FEMALE - SALWAAR KAMMEEZ OR CHURIDHAR ; MALE- LONG TROUSERS AND SHIRTS, (If you can you may also use Sari or Dhothi)
